Access Magazine Review

Melancholia (Indie)

Instead of a scalpel, Janine Stoll dissects the heavy human heart with a sharp wit. The Toronto folk-pop artist uses Melancholia’s nine songs to poke through the ashes of dead or dying relationships, but rather than romanticizing the failures, she examines them with both anger and sympathy. Beautiful songs, tough listening.

Top tracks: ‘Means To My End’, ‘Midnight Men’, ‘Moncton Hotel Room’

“Melancholia”, CD Review by Brenda Carol

Among the incredible heap of great Canadian women singer/songwriters Janine Stoll stands tall. Her company is steep: Joni Mitchell, Alanis Morrisette, Sarah Mclachlan,

Sienna Dahlen and kd Lang. And although Stoll's songs seem to come from some sorted, sorrowful place on her 4th independent release, "Melancholia", Stoll holds the songs together like tiny, threads of breath, defining the magic of words and song captured in time. Her lyrical glimpses give us just an inkling of how powerful and passionate her voice really is. In listening to this cd one can envision a very, dynamic, live performance.

With Stoll's determination she can exude confidence, pride, honour, respect, dignity, sadness all in a few, healthy notes - a marvelous intensity really! Stoll's sheer integrity shining through each song. Stoll's story-songs help us to believe in what she is feeling. Creating a listening empathy for her tales. The stars are very bright for this young songstress!

Press - Great review of "Melancholia"

By Nereida Fernandes, exclaim.ca

Toronto, ON's Janine Stoll opts to go sappy over sassy for her third solo effort. The vanguard sound of 2009's How To Have Sex With Canadians (with the DoneFors) gives way to the more emulative fare of Melancholia, evoking the likes of Sarah Harmer, Paula Cole and Jann Arden. Stoll's heart-on-her-sleeve approach to songwriting and her tender, pining voice lend themselves very well to sentimental folk (her music is much too quaint to be categorized as "romantic pop"). She sets up the perfect ambience in which to wallow, whether you're lost in love or out of, or just bored in between. Her titillating high notes and clever melody lines render opening track "Making Plans" absolutely captivating, while "Tumble Down" makes you ache for the fragile soul finding refuge in its verses. It's exactly the kind of single you expect to find playing on chick flicks. For real life episodes or imaginary plot lines, Melancholia is the perfect soundtrack to a broken heart. (Independent)

The DoneFors | February News

What's Becoming of the World?
January was a difficult month. I think it's safe to say that we all felt the rumble from the devastating earthquake that took place in Haiti on Tuesday, January 12th, 2010. The out-pouring of support from the global community has been a humbling thing to witness. But there is still the fear that once Haiti seizes to make front-page news, it will be easily forgotten and replaced with twitter updates from your favourite celebrity gossip sites.

On January 19th, The DoneFors held one of Toronto's first fundraising efforts for the people of Haiti. We turned one of our Cameron House residency nights into a benefit for Doctor's Without Borders and were able to raise $420. Though this is a modest amount, we hope that it's made some difference and found its way into caring and capable hands. Many thanks to the CBC Night News for coming out to cover the event, and to anyone who showed up to make a donation. We encourage everyone to please give whatever you can to help out Haiti. To make a donation to Doctor Without Borders please visit http://www.msf.ca/

The Globe and Mail said....
"Essential Track: The Narrator, The DoneFors, from How to have sex with Canadians (independent, streaming at myspace.com/donefors) The DoneFors's Janine Stoll goes all Brazilian on this cool, beat-shifting number from one of Canada's craftiest indie bands. An instant addiction once you hear it, on the band's myspace page or during The DoneFors's Tuesday nights at Toronto's Cameron House. "

Janine Stoll Melancholia CD Release Party

It's coming up so soon and Janine is losing sleep and brain cells over small details. Releasing a new album is like having a baby and hoping that people won't think your baby is ugly. You're invited to the Baby Shower, folks. It's the birth of Melancholia - Janine's third solo album, and a super somber one at that. Full of lyrically meaty songs of loss, longing, hope, and all of that other stuff that songwriters are famous for purging their souls of. Janine does it very beautifully here. The event all happens Friday, February 12th at the gorgeous Music Gallery in Toronto. The DoneFors will be performing. Special guests for the night include John MacLean, Jennifer Dallas and Brian Kobayakawa. Doors at 7:00pm and show at 8:00pm sharp. Tickets can be pre-purchased through Janine's website at www.janinestoll.com/store.php. Admission is $16 in advance and $20 at the door. Admission includes a copy of Melancholia and a complimentary beverage. Many thanks to sponsors Platz & Associates Inc. and HR/IR Satellite Inc.

Dirty Bits
Each month in this section we ask The DoneFors a new and revealing question...
This month we've asked them: What's the best way to NOT beat the winter blues?

Paul's way to suffer from the winter blues:
- Waiting at the bus stop, but never getting on one.
- Standing in a snow drift for the entire afternoon.
- Eating ice cream for breakfast lunch and dinner.

Janine's way to suffer from the winter blues:
- Drive to and from the laundromat
- eat canned soup
- watch reality tv
- wear the crappiest footwear possible
- wear a good ol' fashioned perma-scowl

Liam's way to suffer from the winter blues:
- Live in a basement and don't go out until the sun is down.

Brian's way to suffer from the winter blues:
- Sleep in until the sun goes down (which is a rather easy thing to do in the winter), or get up with the sun but stay indoors all day because it's so f'n' cold.
- Plan a 'weather permitting' picnic everyday, but watch the weather channel instead, with the volume just loud enough to supply subliminal musak to mope around the house to. Or! The best way to not beat the winter blues...
- Watch the 24 hour news channel 24 hours a day.

Think about other people. Smile at everybody. Eat your greens.

Love,
janine, brian, liam and paul
